Eco Fishing Trip with Shifting Tides @ Port of Garibaldi, OR
Register for this event and learn more about how to prepare for a day of deep sea fishing: https://www.shiftingtidesnw.com/workshops/ecofishingtrip2
Calling all who fish or would like to learn how! Now's your chance in a no-pressure, fun only, fishing trip! We’re going fishing with Garibaldi Charters!! A combination fishing and crabbing… come aboard the DnD for a fun morning with Capt Marty , deckhand Robby, and marine biologist Alanna, a group likely to make you laugh, and always on the hunt for the big school (as well as puffins if Alanna has anything to say about it). You'll leave with fish and crabs and a wealth of information about the Oregon Coast! I promise, it is worth the very early morning.
We’ll be heading out with Garibaldi Charters to chase rockfish and crab, and maybe even some lingcod! Fun for beginners as well as experienced fisher people! Crabbing included (weather permitting). This trip includes everything you will need to fish with, as well as filleting and crab cooking at the end of your trip.
Our main target is the Black Rockfish (a tasty, mild, white fish), but many other varieties, including Ling Cod, are often caught on this trip. Limit for rockfish is 5 per person, and lingcod limit is 2 per person. Catches vary day to day, sometimes you may limit out but sometimes not! As a bonus, 6 crab pots are set at the beginning of each tour (ocean conditions permitting), and picked up on the way back in – so be sure to get your shellfish permit in additional to your fishing license if you would like to share in the shellfish fun!
We’ll talk about coastal ecology, seabirds, and what makes Oregon’s commercial fisheries so special, and sustainable!

Oregon’s large tidal exchange provides a dynamic and unique look into a world beyond our own. Low tide offers a rare glimpse into the lives of creatures usually hidden beneath the waves. Explore the shores, stepping into the unique underwater universe of our rocky shores, and find green and pink anemones, vibrant sea stars, shore crabs, hermit crabs, iridescent sea slugs, prehistoric chitons, tide-pool fish, and so much more! Observing this vibrant ecosystem up close provides a fascinating look at the resilience and diversity of coastal marine life.

This workshop will go over tides, general oceanography, seasonal ocean conditions, and intertidal ecology. Students will learn how to identify various PNW seaweeds (about 5-10 depending on location and what’s present). Practice seaweed identification, learn sustainable harvest techniques, as well as common processing and preservation methods. See examples of processed seaweeds and great identification and cooking resources.
The collection of living seaweeds in Oregon only runs from March 1 - June 15th. Now is your chance to learn about these wildly important and nutrient dense sea vegetables. These algae can be eaten fresh, dried or pickled for later use which we’ll discuss in great depth.
